This time around I have had all kinds of cool things to share! A lot from the music I listen to everyday.
For India:
Producer Timbaland works with singer Amar to record the song "Bombay".
For the middle east, one of my favorite band from my teenager years, the all Aremnian band System of a Down. Quite often in their melodies you can hear the middle eastern influence.
For blues, the immortal B.B. King and U2
"When Love Comes to Town"
And my favorite anime movie, some of you may have seen Akira. This is part of the score for the movie, and although it is a Japanese film there is very strong Indonesian influence. I'm not entirely sure but it may even to be safe to say it is in fact a gamelon.
How cool is it that you listen to music influenced from India and the Middle East on a daily basis! The song "Bombay" was really interesting because although the two styles are very different, they meshed nicely. The song from System of a Down sounds very similar to the music my brothers listen to. I'll have to tell them about this band to see if they've heard of it. I really liked the video for "When Love Comes to Town" because it showed what was going on behind the scenes as well as the performance of the song. I definitely agree that the music from Akira sounds like a gamelan to me!
ReplyDeleteIt is very evident that Indian music in the form of the more contemporary Bollywood style is just spreading right across the world. The Indian vocals in the Timbaland song is in "Hindi". I can recognize the difference between Hindi and Tamil because I learned some Tamil in school back home.
ReplyDeleteI have a confession to make, I have heard a lot about System of a down but this was the first time that I heard some of their music. The middle eastern influence in it is clearly evident as you said. It sounded like they used some traditional instruments too.
I really like the anime soundtrack you posted. It does sound like a Gamalon.
I love System of a Down! I absolutely love this song, especially because of how evident the middle eastern influence is. I am really not into anime, so I would have never thought to listen to the anime soundtrack and find the sound of what does seem like a Gamelon. I loved all of your videos!
ReplyDeleteFun videos, Anna. I'm just absolutely fascinated by the way that music of other cultures finds it's way into our pop world, and how they combine Western pop with their own styles. The future should be very interesting.
ReplyDelete(Do keep working on that proofreading...)
In high school I listened to System of a Down way too much. I don't think I really thought about the specific cultures that influenced their music, but now that I go back and listen I can hear it. I guess I was more culturally adventurous in high school than I thought I was. :) Nice post!
ReplyDeleteI love SOAD! My friend Alan did a presentation in World Histories in my High School and used them for the genocide that happened there and I've always been drawn to their cause ever since...
